Introduction
Zaynab bint Jahsh was a cousin of the Prophet from a noble Makkan family, and among the early women to migrate to Madinah. Her first marriage, to Zayd ibn Harithah at the Prophet's urging, ended, and Allah then ordained her marriage to the Prophet, an event revealed in the Quran.
Aisha, who rivalled her in the Prophet's affection, said she had never seen a woman more devout, God-conscious, truthful, mindful of family ties, generous and charitable than Zaynab. The Prophet's remark that the one with the longest hand would follow him first was understood after her death as a reference to her charity.
She died in the caliphate of Umar, the first of the Prophet's wives to follow him.
