Introduction
Zayd ibn Thabit was a boy of Medina when the Prophet arrived there. He was brought to him as a child who had already memorised several surahs, and he became one of the scribes who wrote down revelation. He was only about eleven years old at the Hijrah, but his intelligence and diligence were noticed early.
At the Prophet's instruction he learned the writing of the Jews of Medina, and mastered it in a fortnight, so that the Prophet could correspond without a third party. This gift for languages and writing, along with a fine memory for the Quran, made him the person Abu Bakr turned to when the Quran needed to be gathered into a single volume after the Battle of Yamamah.
Later, under Uthman, he led the committee that copied the Quran into standard codices. He was also considered the foremost authority on inheritance law (fara'id) among the Companions, and he taught in Medina for decades.
