Introduction
Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, the elder brother of Ali and cousin of the Prophet, embraced Islam in the early days at Makkah. When persecution intensified he led the group of believers who took refuge in Abyssinia, and stood before the Negus as their spokesman, presenting the faith with clarity and dignity.
He rejoined the Prophet at Khaybar in 7 AH after years abroad. The Prophet is reported to have said he resembled him in appearance and character, and Abu Hurairah called him the most generous of people to the poor, bringing them into his home and offering whatever was in it.
A year later, at the battle of Mu'tah against a far larger Byzantine force, he was named second commander after Zayd ibn Harithah. He took the standard when Zayd fell and fought to the end, dying with wounds across his body.
